Building Custodian Job in Berkshire County

Job Title: Building Custodian, Gig for 6 weeks (ends 9/1/23)

Hours: Mon-Fri, 2p-10:30p

Salary: $18/hr - $19/hr


The Building Custodian is responsible for routine manual cleaning and maintenance work. It entails responsibility for the efficient performance of janitorial tasks for city buildings/locations. The maintenance duties are semi-skilled and do not require journeyman trade or craft knowledge. It also includes maintenance of grounds, walks, lawns & shrubbery.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary duties performed are general cleaning & dusting; sweeping, washing, buffing and waxing floors, changing light bulbs, sweeping walkways, cutting lawns, removing snow and ice, caring for custodial equipment emptying wastebaskets, removing trash and recyclables, operating low pressure heating and ventilating systems, ordering custodial supplies, and making minor repairs to buildings, equipment and heating, lighting, ventilation and plumbing systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining order and safeguarding occupants in addition to the custodial and housekeeping duties when the latter are primary.
  • Sanitizing door handles, high-touch surface areas, bathrooms, etc.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub and wax floors and stairs.
  • Dust woodwork, shelves, office furniture and other equipment.
  • Clean wash bowls, toilets and drinking fountains.
  • Supply materials for use in wash rooms, collects paper and rubbish, and empties wastebaskets.
  • Wash windows, walls and window blinds.
  • Polish brass and metal work.
  • Turns lights on/off when necessary, closes and locks doors and windows.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • General experience in janitorial and maintenance work is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of modern building cleaning materials, methods and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently.
  • Ability to accept responsibility & work with minimal supervision.
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse population, including employees and building visitors.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.


WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent works in various dynamic municipal buildings and locations. While performing the duties of the Custodian, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Frequent periods of outside work may be entailed, subject to all weather conditions and extremes.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to utilize all machines, devices, tools used in custodial work. Move throughout the municipal buildings which may include flights of stairs. Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring stability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper mechanics and techniques. May periodically be required to operate a computer to access e-mail.

Continuous walking, standing, climbing; frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions. Must be able to push/pull/lift objects weighing up to 50lbs.
