Director of Health & Safety Job in Pittsfield, MA

Job Type: Direct Hire

Salary: $80 – 95k, depending on experience

Location: Pittsfield, MA

Hours: 8a – 4:30p

TEC is assisting a local school program in the recruitment of a Director of Health and Safety to join their team in the fall. As part of the leadership team, the Director of Health and Safety is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors at this program. This position oversees the School Nurse, Nutrition Services, Maintenance Department, and transportation services.  This person must also ensure compliance with Massachusetts Dept of Early Education and Care (EEC) regulations, Program Performance Standards and all local, state and federal laws.


Job Responsibilities: 

  • Health Services Management:
  • Supervise and support the school nurse to ensure compliance with health regulations, including MA EEC and health regulations
  • Develop and implement health policies, including emergency response protocols, communicable disease management, and wellness initiatives for young children
  • Oversee student health records to meet MA EEC licensing and requirements, including immunizations, screenings, and health history documentation
  • Collaborate with teachers, student support services, and leadership to address physical and mental health needs of children and families
  • Maintenance Oversight:
  • Direct the maintenance team to ensure a safe, clean, secure and operational environment conducive to early childhood learning and care
  • Ensure that the Facilities Manager completes regular facility inspections and oversees the identification and mitigation of risks, ensuring compliance with MA EEC regulations and Program Performance Standards
  • Transportation Coordination:
  • In conjunction with the Program Manager, supervise bussing services to ensure the safe transport of children, ensuring adherence to MA EEC transportation guidelines and transportation requirements
  • Develop transportation policies that prioritize efficiency, accessibility, and equity, with special attention to the developmental needs of student families
  • Yearly submission of Transportation Oversite Plan to EEC and update of the Transportation Plan
  • Oversee safety checks and ensure the completion of driver training compliance with state and federal transportation safety standards
  • Oversee and negotiate transportation contracts
  • Leadership and Collaboration:
  • Lead and inspire cross-departmental teams to uphold health and safety standards in alignment with MA EEC and guidelines
  • Serves as the primary contact for safety concerns and emergency management, coordinating with local authorities as needed
  • Coordinate drills and training for staff and students, including fire, lockdown, and evacuation procedures
  • Submit all reporting as required by state, federal, local, and program requirements
  • Completes content area annual self-assessment and reports to required staff and committees
  • Collaborates with community partners by co-leading the Health and Mental Health Services Advisory Committee and managing those partnerships 
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB):
  • Foster and inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued in health and safety planning, ensuring early education access
  • Ensure compliance with MA EEC and requirements for equitable access to health services, safe facilities, and transportation for all children, including those with disabilities
  • Create a culture of belonging by engaging all stakeholders in developing practices that affirm and celebrate the unique identities of children, families, and staff
  • Collaborate with DEIB leaders and families to address systemic barriers in safety and health protocols
  • Communication and Training:
  • Provide clear communication to stakeholders, including families, regarding health and safety initiatives
  • Develop and deliver training programs for staff on MA EEC and specific safety practices and requirements
  • Engage families and the broader community to build trust and transparency in program safety operations
  • All other duties as assigned



Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Business Administration or related field required
  • Master’s degree and current MA Registered Nursing license preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a pediatric care setting
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience
  • Previous experience working with young children, preferably in early childhood education
